Brazen: Marked by flagrant and insolent audacity.
Impudent; immodest; shameless. Clear and obvious, without any attempt
to be hidden.
My art is a bold, brash celebration of the wide spectrum of human
emotion. When I paint, I invite my audience to share in the grief
embedded in my blues, the passion shoved into my reds, the ecstasy
rubbed into my yellows – and recognize the place of these emotions
in their own lives. Through my art, I explore the similarities in
our life experiences: Each of us, regardless of race, religion, cultural
background, family, morality, sexual orientation, or education, experience
the same array of emotions. In essence, we all feel the same inside.
Thus, my inspiration is the life experiences that cross all cultural
and racial barriers. Often, my paintings are emotional self-portraits.
While I generally use slivers of my own life story as motivation,
I may occasionally utilize the emotion embedded in film, books, and
the stories of personal acquaintances to inspire a theme. I believe
that in exploring the deepness of emotion together, we will recognize
our similarities and slowly dissolve the boundaries constructed between
us.
I also suggest the commonality of the human experience in the abstract
mesh of ethnic features represented in my paintings. Large lips might
be paired with a slender nose. Yellow (or “blonde”) hair
might be slipped over blue skin. Pieces of many different peoples
are represented in my work. Color and content are carefully selected
to illustrate the universal experience of “being human.”
I work primarily in acrylic paint but may occasionally utilize other
media to emphasize or embellish a theme. I intentionally use vibrant,
enticing colors so as to have a “brazen” impact upon my
audience, forcing them to reflect upon the emotion presented to them
on canvas and its place amongst all of humanity.
.....biography.................................................................................
Art has been an intricate part of my life since I was a child. I am
primarily self-taught, however, I received basic training through
some elementary, high school and continuing education classes. While
my birthplace is Caracas, Venezuela, I consider myself a Georgia native
as I had lived in this state the majority of my life. I received a
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Cum Laude, from the University of
Georgia, and have also spent time studying in Puerto Rico and France.
Recent honors include: Exhibiting artist for “Muse: The Madonna
Tribute Party,” recipient of funding for a short video/public
art project for the Metropolitan Public Art Coalition’s “The
Big Picture 2002,” featured as September artist for LowCo Advertising
Agency’s “Artist Exposure” program, and featured
artist in “Feminine Images of God” exhibition curated
by the Colombia Theological Seminary and the Individual Visual Artists
Coalition. While painting is my primary mode of expression, I also
explore life and my own creativity through video, photography, poetry
and dance.
