Between saving-the-world stints as Jack Bauer, "24" actor Kiefer Sutherland has found time to create the CD cover artwork for "Live X 12," the latest charitable disc from 99X.
As always, the locally recorded live cuts culled from the rock station's roster will benefit the I Am 99X Foundation.
During the past year, the Emmy winner has become a friend to the co-hosts of the station's "New Morning X" as they've helped to break singer-songwriter Rocco DeLuca, a recording artist on Sutherland's Ironworks record label. When the Morning X traveled to Los Angeles this year to cover the Grammys, 99X program director Leslie Fram and co-worker Sean Demery got an exclusive tour of the Ironworks facility, including Sutherland's living quarters.
"I was just walking around and noticed this painting area and this dark, beautiful painting," Fram tells Buzz. "Sean was busy touching his Emmys, and I was nosing around looking at his art. It was pretty cool."
Afterward, Fram made an official request for Sutherland to do the project's artwork (previous contributors include Peter Max, Michael Stipe, David Bowie and Howard Finster, mind you).
This year's "Live X" compilation features DeLuca, Perry Farrell, The Shins, Queens Of The Stone Age, Tom Morello, Rilo Kiley, Silversun Pickups, 30 Seconds To Mars, The Bravery, Dinosaur Jr. and others.
The disc will be released Nov. 20 exclusively at all metro Atlanta Best Buy locations for $9.99.
The station will host a CD release party Nov. 7 at Smith's Olde Bar in Midtown with a special performance by DeLuca.
Kid catches a break
Robert James Ritchie, known to "hick-hop" —- and now hash brown —- fans as Kid Rock, can devote all his time assembling a crack team of Atlanta legal eagles now that he's skated on a scuffle involving Tommy Lee. The Associated Press reports that no criminal charges will be filed in the dust-up between the two classy rockers (both ex-husbands of Pamela Anderson) at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Rock, aka Richie, 36, wasn't taken into custody, but was cited by police for misdemeanor battery after he was accused of slapping and punching the 45-year-old Motley Crue drummer. Witnesses said that although Kid Rock threw the only blows that landed, Lee appeared to have started it.
Kid still faces a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from his Oct. 21 arrest at a local Waffle House. (We're guessing he's got Bruce Harvey on his speed dial by now.)
When philanthropy and fab collide
Something tells us that the regulars at Opera, the chic Midtown nightclub in Atlanta, might possibly be a different bunch than the usual socialista suspects hitting Atlanta's filet-and-asparagus spears circuit. But the clubbing crowd has a chance to show its philanthropic side this Saturday night. Nourishment VII, the seventh annual cocktail party benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank, is planned from 7 to 10 p.m. In past years, more than 300 attendees raised 20,000 holiday meals for those in need. This year's goal is 25,000 meals. Hosted and produced by Dorothea Bozicolona-Volpe and Bondgirl Productions in conjunction with Alston-Dixon events, Nourishment VII will feature DJ Swivel, a complimentary Peroni beer for each reveler, giveaways from local restaurants and businesses, a silent auction and exhibition of mixed media works by artist Robert DeLoach. Admission is $20 or five items of canned and/or boxed nonperishable food. Info: www.acfb.org, www.bond girlproductions.com.
A tasteful portrait by the artist
Nigerian-born, Atlanta-based artist Onyeka Ibe was feted at an Oct. 25 reception at Huff Harrington Fine Art in Buckhead. Guests sipped champagne and enjoyed nibbles from A Royal Affair Cafe while admiring a painting demonstration. We're told Ibe "deftly captured the beautiful curves of his scantily [but very tastefully] clad model."
Ibe's story is as compelling as his art. Born in Nigeria in 1971 during a time of political turmoil, he nevertheless was able to focus on his passion and won a national art competition at 16 to exhibit work at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lagos. After receiving a full scholarship to high school and earning a degree in fine arts from the University of Benin, Ibe came to the United States on a visit sponsored by Ebony Magazine and basketball legend Magic Johnson. "Onyeka Ibe: Solo" runs through Nov. 24 at Huff Harrington, owned by Ann Huff and Meg Harrington. Info: 404-257-0511 or www.huffharrington.com.
