Painting is a process. A process by which I explore internal questions allowing intuition and spirit to lead the way. My approach originates from the questions I ask of myself -- the inner stirring inevitably leads to outward expression. Becoming an act of editing that which is found, reacting with spontaneity and reacting each moment to the proceeding action, creating something a keen to taking a journey in a mysterious land, speeding through outer space, pulsing through one’s body or tripping over one’s mind.
The process results in a range of styles, from the abstract to the playful. An alchemy that sometimes turns old palettes into paintings, energetic expressions into flights of fancy and idioms into graphic drawings. The work is marked with a tenacious spirit, calligraphic markings and a bold use of color.
My quest for integration is intuitively expressed with a variety of mediums. Using acrylic, oil, odd found scrapes of paper or wood, graphite, ink, sand, sawdust, eggshells, metal pieces, wax, polymers, tar, Plexiglas, etc, the work speaks to the juxtaposition of life in a naive, raw and unrestrained manner.
Born in Mobile, Alabama, Maxey Andress earned a BFA from Auburn University. Andress founded and managed EM2 Design, an Atlanta-based nationally renowned design firm, for 17 years. Throughout his professional career, Andress has remained an important and active member of the art community; serving on the board of directors of myriad local and national arts organizations, as well as teaching at Atlanta College of Art, Georgia State University and the Portfolio Center.
His work has been exhibited in regional galleries since 1993 and is included in numerous private and public collections. He has been published in Graphis, Step and Metropolis magazines. Today, Andress's journey has led him to an exploration of spirit, a nucleus of creative energy, and, ironically, a place of comfort for as long as he can remember. He explores his passions by working from the inside out.
