Biography

Justin Winslow is a 29-year-old local Atlanta artist who has been creating his one of a kind pieces since early childhood. He has a true connection between hand and heart that is evidenced by his work. His ink and watercolor images reflect his fascination with everything symbolic, from pop icons to monsters to visual metaphors. He was formally trained at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. His primary influences range from Pop artists to classical painters. He is also inspired by the underground music culture and enjoys traveling abroad. When he is not creating original art, he can be found working at a local broadcast design firm named Primal Screen. There, he designs animated commercials for Cartoon Network, PBS Kids, HGTV, and more.

Artist's Statement
I describe my work as "whimsical pop-surrealist illlustrations." It exists somewhere on that blurry border between Fine Art and Illustration. I like the idea of breaking down those barriers. Certain pieces were deliberately intended to work as illustration, while others are more symbolic of personal themes and ideas. I‚m interested in visual work that tells a story or satirizes. My primary influences range from Pop artists like Keith Haring, Mark Ryden, and Ryan McGinness to classical painters such as Bosch, Miro, Blake, and Grandville. For several years now, I‚ve been exploring the expressive qualities of India ink on paper. I‚m drawn to the clean, graphic quality of sensuous ink lines and how they boldly provide a skeleton for my ideas and fluid watercolors. I believe all artwork should have that organic balance. That is why I‚m attracted to visual metaphors in art, they transcend written language and can be interpreted by people of all races, cultures, socioeconomic classes and sexual orientations. I‚m trying to communicate my ideas to as many different groups as possible, hopefully, with a wink. Artist's Resume: OBJECTIVE: To further exhibit my work within the gallery world, bridging the gap between illustration and fine art.
